Holiday host kit
A Christmas Password Game with 24 Words and a Winter Swap List
Use this one-word-clue game for a Christmas gathering with two teams. The 24-word host key below includes easy objects and a few abstract challenges. Pick the words your guests know; a complete round does not require buying anything or sharing personal holiday stories.
Set up without revealing the answers
For a four-player paper game, make two teams of two. One person on each team gives clues and the other guesses; a non-playing host helps if available. Copy secret words onto separate slips and show the current word only to both clue-givers. Keep this page and its clue key away from guessers.
Each clue-giver says one word and their partner gets one guess. Alternate teams after a miss, then rotate roles when the word ends. Use a one-point paper score per solved word, alternate the starting team, and pass after four unsuccessful clues. These are optional party house rules; the app’s Classic mode uses decreasing points.
A 20-minute party agenda
- Minutes 0–3: choose 12 words from the key, explain privacy and model Candle → Flame. Keep the other words as reserves.
- Minutes 3–8: use familiar decoration words. Give everyone a turn as clue-giver; allow a quiet pass.
- Minutes 8–14: move to food and winter objects. Use only words all players recognize.
- Minutes 14–18: offer the four challenge words if the group wants them; otherwise continue with familiar objects.
- Minutes 18–20: finish the current word. If tied, allow a shared win or give each team a separate reserve word with the same four-clue limit.
Private host key: 24 words and optional clues
The clue is a starting suggestion, not the only valid association. A clue must not contain the answer. Never read the notes during an active guessing turn.

| Secret word | One-word clue | Host note |
|---|---|---|
| Wreath | Door | An evergreen decoration; use Circle if Door is too broad. |
| Ribbon | Bow | The strip tied around a parcel, not the parcel itself. |
| Stocking | Mantel | The hanging fabric container; explain the custom before play if unfamiliar. |
| Ornament | Bauble | A decoration hung on a tree; Decoration is an alternative. |
| Sleigh | Runner | A vehicle on runners; Snow is an easier association. |
| Reindeer | Antlers | A familiar Christmas association; other antlered animals are plausible guesses. |
| Carol | Song | A seasonal song; Singing is another legal clue. |
| Tinsel | Sparkle | Shiny strands used as decoration. |
| Parcel | Delivery | A wrapped package; Package is an easier clue. |
| Cinnamon | Spice | Choose a familiar aroma; no tasting or food handling is required. |
| Cocoa | Chocolate | The warm drink in this round; Powder is another association. |
| Candle | Flame | Keep this as a word game; no lit candles are needed. |
| Scarf | Neck | A familiar cold-weather item. |
| Mitten | Thumb | Contrast with a glove after the guess. |
| Chimney | Smoke | A structure above a fireplace. |
| Gingerbread | Cookie | A spiced baked treat; House is a harder association. |
| Evergreen | Pine | A plant that keeps foliage through the year. |
| Nutcracker | Shell | A tool as well as a decorative figure. |
| Garland | Drape | A decorative string or strand; Festoon is a harder clue. |
| Lantern | Glow | A portable light; Handle is a less direct clue. |
| Snowflake | Crystal | A seasonal association, not a requirement for the local weather. |
| Tradition | Custom | Something a group repeats; avoid requiring anyone to share personal traditions. |
| Generosity | Giving | An abstract word for the challenge round. |
| Surprise | Unexpected | A response to something unanticipated. |
Use a winter theme when Christmas references do not fit
Choose the theme with the group before the event. A winter round is an alternative, not a claim that everyone has the same climate or traditions. Substitute these pairs and use the familiar scarf, mitten, cocoa and lantern words above.

| Replace | Use instead | Example clue |
|---|---|---|
| Stocking | Blanket | Cozy |
| Carol | Breeze | Wind |
| Reindeer | Penguin | Waddle |
| Sleigh | Sled | Hill |
| Tinsel | Frost | Window |
| Ornament | Icicle | Drip |
| Nutcracker | Thermos | Flask |
| Garland | Boot | Foot |
Keep the game welcoming
Let players observe or pass, and preview unfamiliar words without revealing the chosen order. Use large, clearly written secret slips. On a video call, send the target privately to the current clue-givers and share only an answer-free player view.
Do not turn holiday knowledge, reading speed or pronunciation into a penalty. Agree before play whether a pronunciation clearly identifying the intended word counts. If two answers fit a clue, discuss that after the turn and choose a more precise clue next time.
Build your selected round in PlayPassword
Copy your chosen secret words into a newline list. Sign in, choose Classic, and paste the list into the first Password field at Step 3. In Host Mode, enter each prepared clue with its answer instead. Preview privately before guests join; this article does not automatically import the key.
Use the public sample to check the flow. Check current plans before choosing live rooms or paid template features.
